The Reserve Bank of India has extended its directions on The Suri Friends’ Union Co-operative Bank Ltd. for another three months, subject to review. The central bank said the extension should not be construed as satisfaction with the bank’s financial position.

The Reserve Bank of India has extended the period of operation of its directions on The Suri Friends’ Union Co-operative Bank Ltd., Suri, West Bengal, by three months. The extension will run from the close of business on October 22, 2026, until the close of business on January 22, 2027, subject to review.

The RBI said the extension was issued under sub-section (1) of Section 35A read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. The central bank stated that it was satisfied that extending the directions beyond October 22, 2026, was necessary in the public interest.

The original directions were issued to the bank on July 21, 2022, under Directive No. CO.DOS.SED.No.S2574/12-07-005/2022-23. They were initially imposed for six months, up to the close of business on January 22, 2023.

According to the RBI, the directions were subsequently extended and were last continued up to the close of business on October 22, 2026. That latest extension was issued through Directive No. DOR.MON.D-25/12.29.046/2026-27 dated July 14, 2026.

The regulator specifically cautioned that the extension or modification of the directions should not, by itself, be interpreted as the RBI being satisfied with the financial position of the bank. The statement does not provide a fresh assessment of the bank’s financial position.

The RBI also said that all other terms and conditions of the directions would remain unchanged. The latest order therefore continues the existing regulatory framework applicable to the bank while setting January 22, 2027, as the end of the newly extended period, subject to any review by the central bank.

The order was issued by Brij Raj, Chief General Manager, on behalf of the Reserve Bank of India. It was published as Press Release 2026-2027/1367 on October 22, 2026.

What the RBI order establishes

  • The directions on Suri Friends’ Union Co-operative Bank have been extended for three months.
  • The extension applies from the close of business on October 22, 2026, to the close of business on January 22, 2027.
  • The extension is subject to review by the RBI.
  • The existing terms and conditions of the directions remain unchanged.
  • The RBI has clarified that the extension does not indicate satisfaction with the bank’s financial position.

Why it matters

The order keeps the RBI’s directions on the West Bengal-based co-operative bank in force for an additional three months and records that the existing conditions will continue unchanged. The RBI’s qualification is important because the extension is a regulatory continuation, not an indication that the central bank has cleared or endorsed the bank’s financial position.
