BKK Bureau, New Delhi | 21 October 2026 | 2:26 PM IST
The Reserve Bank of India absorbed ₹1,17,327 crore through its liquidity operations conducted on October 20, 2026, according to its daily money-market operations statement. The figure represents net liquidity from the day’s operations, calculated after accounting for funds provided through the Marginal Standing Facility and funds placed with the RBI under the Standing Deposit Facility.
On the day, banks accessed ₹29,561 crore through the one-day Marginal Standing Facility at a rate of 5.75%. At the same time, ₹1,46,888 crore was placed with the RBI under the one-day Standing Deposit Facility at 5.25%. The difference between these two facilities resulted in net liquidity absorption of ₹1,17,327 crore for the day.
The RBI’s statement also listed outstanding operations from earlier dates. These included a seven-day repo operation conducted on October 19, with ₹1,00,014 crore outstanding until October 26 at a rate of 5.51%. An outstanding reverse-repo operation dated October 8 involved ₹37,055 crore and was scheduled to mature on November 6 at a rate of 5.49%.
Other outstanding facilities included ₹48 crore under the Marginal Standing Facility and ₹2,920 crore under the Standing Deposit Facility, both dated October 19 and scheduled to mature on October 21. The RBI also reported ₹8,936.05 crore availed under its Standing Liquidity Facility.
Taking outstanding operations together, the RBI recorded net liquidity injection of ₹69,023.05 crore. However, after including the day’s operations, the overall position showed net liquidity absorption of ₹48,303.95 crore. The RBI defines net liquidity as repo, MSF and SLF funds minus reverse-repo and SDF funds.
The statement showed no recorded volume in the overnight money-market segment on October 20. Call money, triparty repo, market repo and repo in corporate bonds were each listed at zero volume. The term segment also showed zero volume across notice money, term money, triparty repo, market repo and corporate-bond repo.
Scheduled commercial banks had cash balances of ₹8,42,024.88 crore with the RBI as of October 20. The average daily cash-reserve requirement for the fortnight ending October 31 was listed at ₹8,33,309 crore. The RBI’s statement therefore recorded cash balances above the reported average daily requirement for that fortnight.
The release also reported the Government of India’s surplus cash balance reckoned for auction at ₹1,00,014 crore as of October 19. Net durable liquidity was recorded at a surplus of ₹10,14,401 crore as of September 30. All amounts in the RBI statement are in crore rupees unless otherwise specified, and rates are in per cent.
Why it matters
The RBI’s daily operations statement provides a direct view of how short-term liquidity was managed in the banking system. It also shows the scale of bank balances held with the central bank, the use of RBI liquidity facilities and the distinction between same-day absorption and the position after outstanding operations are included.
