The Reserve Bank of India has announced a final redemption price of ₹14,425 per unit for the Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2018-19 Series-II tranche. The redemption is due on October 23, 2026, according to an RBI press release issued on October 22.

The tranche was issued on October 23, 2018, under the Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme. The government notification governing the issue provides that the gold bonds are repayable after the expiration of eight years from their issue date. On that basis, October 23, 2026, is the final redemption date for this series.

The RBI said the redemption price is determined using the simple average of the closing price of gold of 999 purity for the previous three business days before the redemption date. The gold prices used for this calculation are those published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA).

For the October 23, 2026, redemption, the three reference business days are October 19, October 21 and October 22. The central bank said the price for 999-purity gold across these dates was averaged in accordance with the scheme’s pricing formula, resulting in a final redemption value of ₹14,425 for each SGB unit.

The RBI release cites the Government of India notification F.No.4(22)-B(W&M)/2018 dated October 8, 2018, as the basis for the maturity provision. The announcement specifically concerns the final redemption of the identified 2018-19 Series-II tranche and does not set a redemption price for other SGB issues.

The ₹14,425 figure applies on a per-unit basis. The RBI’s announcement defines the applicable calculation period and confirms that the price is linked to the average closing price of 999-purity gold over the specified three business days. The final redemption date and price therefore relate to the terms of this particular SGB series.

Sovereign Gold Bonds are issued in units, and the RBI has stated the amount payable at final redemption for this tranche in rupees per unit. The announcement was issued by the RBI’s Communications Department and signed by Ajit Prasad, Deputy General Manager.

Why it matters

The announcement establishes the exact maturity date and per-unit redemption value for holders of the SGB 2018-19 Series-II tranche, providing the official settlement terms for this issue.
